There really is nothing else like bowl season for college football fans. With so many games to choose from, there really is something for everyone as they enjoy the holidays with some entertaining matchups. However, even with so much excitement to fill our calendars there are still some terrible matchups that aren’t really appealing enough to spend the time watching. We broke down the list to identify games you might want to stay away from this season. Here is a look at the four least exciting bowl games for this year.
Las Vegas Bowl – December 15th
Fresno State vs. Arizona State
There were plenty of options to choose from on the first day of the college bowl season but we decided that the Las Vegas Bowl checked off the most boxes as the one to ignore. Herm Edwards and Jeff Tedford have found unexpected success in their second seasons with these programs but neither team features much star power. The Sun Devils can end their recent run of poor postseason play but even if they do it likely won’t be a very exciting contest. There are better options on the board for the first Saturday of bowl season.
Camping World Bowl – December 28th
West Virginia vs. Syracuse
Looking a little further ahead, the showdown between West Virginia and Syracuse had the potential to be one of the better bowl games on the slate before Mountaineers quarterback Will Grier confirmed that he will not play in it. It makes sense that Grier doesn’t want to put millions of dollars on the line to win the Camping World Bowl, but it will be at the expense of a good portion of the hype that would have been in place for this contest. Syracuse can win a bowl game following four straight losing seasons but still, there isn’t much star power to drive this game – Another hard pass.
Cheeze-It Bowl – December 26th
California vs. TCU
There will be plenty to do the day after Christmas and there really is no reason to pass on Boxing Day deals in order to stay home from this one. California and TCU both feature sub-par offenses, with two defensive-minded head coaches that will compete against one another to make this game as boring as possible. We have it marked down as the third-most boring game on the list but the Cheez-It Bowl could easily live up to its name as the most boring game of this year’s bowl season if things go even a little bit worse than expected.
Sun Bowl – December 31st
Stanford vs. Pittsburgh
Speaking of worse than expected, it’s hard to imagine this game getting any hype on New Year’s Eve. Forget that the best games are scheduled for the following day. On its own, the Sun Bowl is one of the least intriguing matchups of this year’s Bowl season. College football fans would be much better off making New Year’s Eve plans than staying home to watch these teams punt the ball back and forth all game.
Pinstripe Bowl – December 27th
Wisconsin vs. Miami
The Badgers walked all over Miami the first time these teams met. Who wants to waste any time watching it happen again? There is no reason to expect much of a difference in the outcome of the second meeting. Even though it will be played in Yankees Stadium, there aren’t many redeeming qualities for this matchup. With so many games scheduled for this year’s bowl season, college football fans would be better off watching something else once December 27th rolls around.
