The next college football season will have a number of highly compelling games and sportsbooks have already started to post lines on them. On that list, some games stand out more than others and as we did our BetOnline review of their odds, they are referring to these as the “Games of the Year”.
With some odds up on the board, let’s take a closer look and see what we should expect from these contests:
Georgia Bulldogs at Alabama Crimson Tide
Odds: Alabama -7
The games between Georgia and Alabama in recent years have been very memorable. Alabama beat Georgia in overtime for the 2017 national championship. Alabama then rallied to beat Georgia in the 2018 SEC Championship Game in another thriller. Both games were extremely close, and both were games in which Georgia outplayed Alabama in the first three quarters before faltering in the fourth quarter and enabling Alabama to make a comeback. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart used to work under Alabama head coach Nick Saban as defensive coordinator. He knows how to recruit on a level similar to Saban. He knows how to coach defense to counter what Saban’s teams want to do on offense. This game will be in Alabama, and Georgia will have a newly uncertain quarterback situation with Jake Fromm being in the pros. However, Georgia regularly plays Alabama tough, chiefly because it has the strength on both the offensive and defensive lines which can match Alabama. The Crimson Tide might win the game outright, but Georgia getting a full touchdown is hard to pass up if you are betting on the point spread.

Ohio State at Penn State
Odds: Ohio State -3
The big key for Ohio State, despite the loss of pass rusher Chase Young to the NFL, is that Justin Fields decided to return at quarterback for another season. Fields is a Heisman Trophy favorite with Trevor Lawrence. He throws and runs really well and makes great decisions with the ball. He gives Ohio State versatility and unpredictability. It will be hard for Penn State’s defense to play any better against Ohio State’s offense than it did last year, when it limited OSU to 28 points. If Ohio State scores more than 28 this time, it will be very hard for Penn State to keep pace.
Ohio State at Oregon
Odds: Ohio State -6
The big detail in this game is that Oregon no longer has veteran quarterback Justin Herbert. He is off to the pros. Oregon has recruited well on its offensive line and will try to rely on that line to handle Ohio State’s defensive front, but the questions circling around Oregon at the quarterback position – compared to Justin Fields of Ohio State – give the Ducks a disadvantage at the most important roster spot on the field. That figures to matter in an early-season game.

Washington at Oregon
Odds: Oregon -6.5
The Washington Huskies lost Jacob Eason at quarterback to the NFL Draft, and they watched Oregon hire Joe Moorhead as its new offensive coordinator. Washington lost head coach Chris Petersen to retirement. It will be awfully difficult for new coach Jimmy Lake to find solutions on offense in this game. Oregon should be a bigger favorite than 6.5 points.
